How Often Should You Clean Your House?

October 31, 2021

If you’re wondering how often should you clean your house, you’re probably not cleaning it enough.

When it comes to cleaning, you either do it when you think its time or you follow a set schedule that keeps you from wondering about when its time.

In this article, we will cover some general guidelines on cleaning frequency.

Keep reading to start cleaning your house or have someone else do it for you.

Start with the Kitchen

As you know, kitchens are notorious for getting dirty. The kitchen should be cleaned on a daily basis, and, better yet, after every use.

So, if you make a mess, clean it up. After cooking, wipe down all of the surfaces, and organize your supplies in their rightful places.

Do the dishes, and clean out the sink. If you think that’s it, you’re wrong. Don’t forget to clean the floors at least once a week and completely clean out the fridge about once a week as well.

Don’t leave rotten/spoiled foods in the fridge. Give all of the kitchen appliances and electronics a solid cleansing once a week.

Continue to the Bathroom

Oddly enough, bathrooms are cleaner than kitchens. Why? Well, that’s a question for another time.  But I’m sure you can get a rough idea if you really think about it.

Nonetheless, cleaning is still important. Wipe down the counters, sink, shower, tub once a day.

Clean the mirrors as needed. Organize all of your appliances and accessories. You can leave the toilet to be cleaned a couple of times a week.

And of course, don’t forget to mop the floors.

Now to the Bedroom

Bedrooms usually need the least work, but not in all cases. Some people are just very messy. If you fall in this camp declutter first and organize your clothes and belongings. Change your linens often, vacuum carpets, and dust furniture.

Vacuum the mattress as well. If you have kids, encourage them to take responsibility for their own rooms, and make this part of their chores.

The beds should be made, the mirrors clean, and the shelves organized. When it comes to the bedroom, you want to make it as stress-free as possible. It’s your room for relaxation, and the last thing you want to worry about is the clothes on the floor and pungent smells.

Don’t Forget the Living Room

The living room depends on the residents of the home. If you have pets and kids, it’s bound to be messy. If you live alone or with a partner, and you both work – the living room might be clean all week long.

In any case, you should vacuum the floors and carpets twice a week. Declutter everything as needed and wipe down surfaces every other day. You can also go as far as vacuuming upholstery, and cleaning it with special soaps that don’t ruin the materials.

Try applying some essentials oils and rubbing them into the floor for some nice aromatherapy. Wash and iron the curtains.

Clean the windows. Wipe down electronics. Organize books.

Miscellaneous Cleaning

Some cleaning can only be done once-a-year. For instance, spring cleaning, winter cleaning, summer cleaning – all of which serve a specific purpose of combatting the elements.

Give your entire home a powerful scrub bi-annually. Clean under and behind all furniture. Dust the fans and ceilings. Empty all shelves, wipe them down, and organize them. Throw away all of the things that you don’t use and hold no value. Wash away stains from walls and try to use an eraser to scrub off scratches and marks. Launder the draperies and linens.

It’s also a good time to check for leaks, pipe drainage, and all sorts of other maintenance. You can make sure that your plumbing is working well, the heating is appropriate, and that your home has enough airflow.

Check your basement (if applicable), make sure there is no mold growing. If there is, call an expert immediately.

5 Cleaning Commandments

Even when you know when to clean, you might now know how to clean. Here are five cleaning commandments to help you out.

  1. Always clean from top to bottom. Upper floor to the basement. Ceilings to the floor.
  2. Always clean from back to front. Start with the outside and move in. From the farthest corner to the closest.
  3. Dust first, vacuum last.
  4. Know your cleaning products. They are not made equal.
  5. Clean as a team. If you have a family, do it all together. Make it fun, turn on some music, and just enjoy the experience.

As you can see, it’s not all that hard. Cleaning can be fun, and it should be. Follow these commandments and your home will shine in no time.

How Often Should You Clean Your House? Now You Know

If you know your home is dirty, don’t wait for the perfect moment to clean it. Just do it. It’s that simple.
